Sports betting
A sports bet concerns a defined market—result, total, handicap, player or event—and settles under written rules. Decimal odds show potential total return per unit including the stake. They reflect estimation, commercial balance and operator margin; they are neither an objective probability nor a promise.

- 01
Choose a market
Identify the competition, match, covered period and winning condition precisely. A match-result market may exclude extra time and penalties.
- 02
Read the odds
At 2.50, a £10 winning stake returns £25: £15 net winnings plus the £10 stake. The price can change until acceptance.
- 03
Confirm the ticket
The receipt records selection, accepted price, stake and potential return. A bet request is not always acceptance; the confirmed ticket defines the transaction.
- 04
Settlement
After the event the market wins, loses or is void under the named data and rules. Participant errors, postponements and abandonment follow the operator’s written policy.

Odds and implied probability
Approximate implied probability for decimal odds is 1 divided by the price: 2.00 is 50%, 4.00 is 25%. Across all outcomes the figures commonly exceed 100%; this overround indicates margin but does not predict a result. Price comparison only works where market definition and settlement rules are identical.
Singles, accumulators and systems
A single depends on one selection. An accumulator multiplies prices but every leg must win, so probability falls rapidly. A system bet creates several combinations and costs the unit stake multiplied by their number. A dramatic total price first reflects a much less likely success.
Handicaps, totals and live bets
A handicap adjusts the score for settlement; a total predicts whether a measure exceeds a line. Asian quarter-lines may split the stake. During live betting prices and availability move quickly, while broadcast feeds may lag behind the state used to accept the ticket.
Voids and official result sources
Rules define minimum duration, extra time, postponements, venue changes, non-runners and palpable errors. The operator also names its result source. A later media correction does not automatically create resettlement. Reading these clauses first prevents discovering the definition only after a loss.
