RTP, house edge and win frequency: three different concepts

RTP describes a theoretical average return, house edge its complement within a given model, and frequency how often outcomes pay. None guarantees the result of one session.

01

Start with total stakes

RTP compares returns with total stakes in the model. A €20 deposit repeatedly restaked can create much greater turnover. The reference is neither the initial deposit nor the closing balance, but all stakes counted during play. Keep those amounts separate when reviewing a history.

02

Calculate the complement without predicting results

In a hypothetical 96% RTP model, the complement is 4%. On €250 of stakes, the model’s average loss is €250 × 0.04 = €10. That does not predict a €10 loss for each person: a session can end with a larger loss, a gain or no available balance.

03

Distinguish a return from a profit

Suppose a €1 stake returns €0.40. An interface may celebrate the payment, but that round still has a net loss of €0.60. When comparing frequency definitions, check whether “win” means any payment, return of the stake or strictly positive profit.

04

Look at the payout distribution

Two models can have the same RTP while distributing returns very differently. One may offer smaller frequent payments, another rare large outcomes. The average alone does not describe long runs without returns or the dispersion of outcomes. Variance and the payout rules provide that context.

05

Check the version and rules

A game name does not fully define its model. Review the displayed rules, variant, qualifying stakes and scope of the stated percentage. Commercial pages may omit context. A high percentage or technical certificate does not establish regulatory authorisation.

06

Use the numbers to understand, not to fund spending

Turnover increases with rounds, including when returns are restaked. More attempts do not turn a negative expected return into income. A detailed online casino RTP does not make that product lawful in France. Product and domain checks come first.

Frequently asked questions

Does 96% RTP refund 96% of my deposit?

No. It is the model’s average return on total stakes, not a personal refund of a deposit.

Is a payment always profit?

No. If the payment is below the stake, the round’s net result is negative.
